Important message from our Executive Director
Curious. Happy. Strong-willed. Precocious. These are just some of the words that come to mind when I think about my one-year-old daughter, Sterling.
I can’t wait for the day we can talk about her dreams and hopes for the future. Will she want to be a doctor? Teacher? Artist? Superhero? The possibilities are endless.
Of course, she lives in a place of infinite opportunity. And while she’ll certainly encounter her fair share of challenges, we have every reason to believe that with hard work, a little grit, and a lot of prayer, she will realize her dreams.
Like you, we have an abundance of hope when it comes to our loved one’s futures. This hope is magnified as we enter the holiday season and consider the free gift of hope Jesus gives everyone who believes, regardless of socio-economic status, location, race, tribe and gender.
This time of year, I can’t help but think of the children I’ve met in Northern Uganda and South Sudan. Like Sterling, they are full of curiosity, joy and loads of potential.
Despite the hardships and challenges they endure, they have dreams and hope for the future just like me – just like you. But they’ll have to work harder, much harder, to fulfill their dreams.
It’s hard to focus on your dreams when you don’t have access to safe and clean drinking water; when you’re too sick to go to school; when the resources you need to succeed simply aren’t available. When survival is your primary focus, hope for the future can be limited. In vulnerable communities in N. Uganda, including the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement and the underserved communities surrounding it, survival remains the central theme of most people’s lives. At 4africa, we’re working to change that.
For too long, money and programs have been pushed at people who really need partnerships and pathways to personal and spiritual advancement. For too long, projects offering short-term solutions have equipped people with just enough to survive, but not quite enough to thrive.
Going into 2021, we’re focusing specifically on empowering people to move beyond a “survival mentality” so they can live productive, fruitful and fulfilling lives. This aspiration is at the core of everything we do, and we do it all in Jesus’ name.
By providing communities with access to clean water along with training and resources needed to stay healthy, we’re removing barriers to survival. By elevating the local church and raising up leaders to enact positive and lasting change, we’re empowering people to thrive now and for generations to come.
In doing this, our prayer is to amplify hope for the future. Because we believe hope is essential. We also believe the promise God made to the Israelites in exile still applies to all those impacted by the refugee crisis today, including our friends in East Africa.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” – Jeremiah 29:11
Hope is a powerful thing. It inspires us to do the impossible.
It motivates us to carry on in difficult times. This holiday season, we invite you to join us in amplifying hope in the lives of some of Africa’s most vulnerable people. When you invest in 4africa, you:
- Enable more women and girls to spend more time focusing on their futures and less time fetching water,
- Ensure kids are healthy enough to attend school,
- Provide youth with the education and leadership opportunities they need to change the trajectory of their communities and nations,
- And most importantly, you empower local churches to disciple more people so they can discover the hope found in our savior, Jesus Christ.
We believe a day is coming when children in E. Africa will experience endless hope and opportunity, just like Sterling and so many other children around the world. Will you help us make this dream a reality?
